Crystal Lake: Why Doesn't Jason Go Home To Pamela After He Survives The Drowning?
Crystal Lake Season 1 has a been a huge success for Peacock and A24 registering 1.3 billion minutes watched in the first week of release and well over 2 billion minutes overall since the series debut on October 15th. The Friday The 13th fans seem to have mostly embraced the new direction of the franchise, but both supporters and detractors of Crystal Lake have the same question. Why did Jason not go back home to Pamela after surviving the drowning in the lake?
The show does not give one explicit monologue explaining why he doesn’t go straight home. The narrative and the finale reunion strongly imply that the near drowning (combined with earlier seizures and oxygen deprivation) damaged his cognitive functions and memory far more than his body. Tim Waggoner's novelization of Crystal Lake actually expands on that notion.
Jason's physical resilience regenerates and strengthens him, but his mind becomes more feral and impaired. He may not fully recognize Pamela or know how to seek her out at first. He’s driven more by survival instinct and territorial behavior in the woods than by clear memories of home and family. This may explain why when larger Jason and Pamela finally meet, he initially doesn’t seem to fully know who Pamela is.
In the final episode of Season 1 (almost a year later), he kills Elias (crushing his head after the father tries to reclaim him) and then nearly chokes Pamela to death. He only stops when her pleas and the emotional connection trigger flashbacks of her love and care for him as a child. He lets her go, gets shot by Ralph, and vanishes back into the woods. Pamela, now certain of his survival and strength, declares that the woods belong to them and that people should stay away.
This explanation should have been made clearer in one of the episodes of Season 1 to soften the impact of Jason simply not returning to Pamela. It is an interesting side effect of the testing on Jason that even though the body is resilient to attacks, the mind will slowly devolve into an animalistic state.
