Crystal Lake Showrunner Discusses Series In Fall Preview And How Much We Will See Jason

 Brad Caleb Kane recently spoke to Polygon for their Fall preview series and talks everything Crystal Lake. The show is set mainly in 1972, about a year after young Jason’s drowning and well before the 1980 original film. Brad, a longtime slasher fan who saw the movies in theaters as a kid, describes the series as a “mixtape” of 1970s culture, post-Vietnam paranoia, crumbling institutions, and personal transformation while still delivering the franchise’s signature gore. He says the kills are “sick” and plentiful.

I also wanted to create a property that appeals to a wider group of people. As much as I grew up with these movies, my wife did not, and I want it to be something that I could watch with her. Not necessarily take the gore or the edge or what makes it Friday the 13th off of it. Keep all that stuff, but widen the appeal to some degree by maybe adding deeper layers of character and motivation and backstory. You can't be all things to all people, but hopefully I was able to integrate enough of those elements that it'll feel satisfying as a complete piece.

The very beginning of the pilot is set in '71. Then the rest of the series, or at least most of the rest of the series, is set in 1972. There is an episode that goes to another time period. But most of the season takes place in 1972, which would be seven or eight years before the events of the first movie.

What is also key in the series is transformation. 

Brad explains:

What you see in the season is [a young camper named] Grace transforming. I won't talk about who else transforms, but again, the country was transforming. The town of Crystal Lake is transforming. That led to the Me Decade obsession with the self, the idea of self-realization, self-reliance. And I wanted to explore all of those things within the context of the slasher franchise, and specifically Friday the 13th.

The big question is how much do we see of Jason in Season 1 and in what form?

No, not Jason in the hockey mask show, but the expectations that fans might have… they'll see more than they think they will. So no hockey mask, because we don't go up through the events of Part Three, but that doesn't mean we don't go into mask territory. And that doesn't mean we don't see Jason, and potentially very clearly. So I'll just leave that right there.

The full eight-episode season of Crystal Lake premieres on Peacock (U.S.) on October 15, 2026 (all episodes at once); also, on Sky Atlantic/NOW in the UK/Ireland and HBO Max across Europe, Middle East, and Africa.
