Anatomy of Crystal Lake: Episode 6: Kill Them, Mommy

Any great horror film has that seminal moment of carnage with a murder spree that leaves the audience breathless with despair but also delight. If you can couple that with a burgeoning psychosis of the killer that expands on the deranged nature of that person, you could have a recipe for a successful and memorable slasher. What has transpired in the Crystal Lake series thus far has shown Pamela Voorhees as a much more developed character that, once she lost her son Jason to Crystal Lake, has been devolving into madness. She has killed a number of characters throughout the show either for survival or to satisfy her maternal instinct. Now, however, she is prepared to listen to Jason as her journey to complete madness is complete.

SPOILERS...

Episode 6: Kill Them, Mommy opens where the last episode concluded as Pam tries to find out how to clean up the deaths of Barry and Claudette. She comforts Grace and tells her she was not responsible for the counselor's deaths, and the drugs are confusing her. Pam then hears Jason's voice. As she looks down the stairs below from the loft, she sees young innocent Jason, not the ominous figure that has been haunting the woods throughout the show. Pam has lost her mind and is now seeing visions of Jason and he tells her to kill the hippies, and they should pay for this because they gave Grace the Acid. Jason says, "kill them mommy, kill them." Pam responds, "I will Jason, I will." These lines are ripped right out of Friday The 13th 1980 and it is spectacular.

Pam puts Barry and Claudette's bodies in a canoe and takes Grace with her across the lake. Her plan is to kill all of the hippies and make it look like they also killed Barry and Claudette due to the acid trip. From here, some awesome stalk and kill scenes for Friday The 13th fans take place. By far, this is the biggest body count for any of the episodes thus far and might be for the entire series. This is what fans have been waiting for, and Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees destroys these hippie teens with gleeful, mischievous, and murderous relish.

While enacting her murderous rampage, Pamela hears Grace scream from afar and lets one hippie teen (Harmony) escape in terror. When she finds Grace by the canoe, another hippie teen is dead, but not by the hands of Pam or Grace. As the camera pans closer to the dead teen, it is revealed that the machete used to kill the two company men from the first episode and thrown into the lake later on by Pam has been used to dispatch the unfortunate bandana wearing young man. Curious, Pam surveys the trees through the dark air, calling for Jason. As she gazes further, she sees Jason in the shadows, and she now knows he is alive.

Directors Celine Held and Logan George once again hit the jackpot here as they are having so much fun filming these classic scenes and have been lucky enough to helm some of the most entertaining Friday The 13th type episodes in the series so far.

The next morning, the state police take over the investigation of the mass murder of the hippie teens and Barry and Claudette and freeze out Sheriff Brooks . Later, Dorf finds out the truth about Brooks and his issues in Newark as a cop on the take in the city. They both have an intense confrontation and Dorf leaves with no respect left for Sheriff.

In Newark, Brianna is at her newspaper job when a mysterious packet arrives containing information on the Bellflower company and Pamela from her New York and Texas days. Her name in the file is Pamela Wittering as more details of her past begins to unfold. Dr. Landau reaches out to Brianna over the phone, reveals he sent the packet, and asks to meet her to discuss what was going on at the Bellflower facility.

In Crystal Lake, Pam is at the town diner and listens in to conversations that Enos and others are having about things they have seen or heard about in the woods, a devil or an intimidating presence. Ralph becomes irritated by the talk and warns everyone, ""There's something in those woods, something unnatural and evil. Go on, have yourself a walk in the woods. You'll never come back again." Classic prophet of doom stuff coming to life courtesy of great acting from Nick Cordileone.

Pam confronts Ralph outside about what he has seen. He reveals that the person in the woods has been watching him and mimicking his habits and learning how to catch animals in traps. Pam reveals that she thinks Jason is what everyone has seen in the woods and Ralph tells her that if it was Jason, it's not her son anymore and he has to be stopped.

Briana continues investigating the company that is after Pam. After Briana attempts to meet Dr. Landau in public, Landau is killed by Bellflower company goons and at long last, the Friday The 13th franchise introduces Jason's father Elias to the fans. Known as Elias Wittering, he confronts Briana about her investigation into his company and reveals that Pam was one of the people involved in some sort of clinical trial his company was initiating but would not go into further detail. After Elias has his people attempt to kidnap Briana, she manages to escape and bring her brother Sheriff Levon Brooks the report on Pam and who she really is.

Later, Grace tells Pamela about the shack that her and Jason used to hang out at in the woods (Introduced in Episode 3), and she goes there to find Jason. She brings food and some of Jason's toys to the shack in a white sack (The sack has S S Lazarus lettering. Who would have thought a Jason Takes Manhattan reference would be in this show). As she patrols the surrounding area around the shack, she hears a commotion and when she returns to the structure, she witnesses everything she brought there has been destroyed. Jason's anger and rage is manifesting and may eventually be aimed at Pamela.

The episode concludes with Levon and Briana going to Pam's home and confronting her about her real identity. Pam sits down at her table and tries to find the way to tell her story.
